JUNIOR PRIMARY PHASE

Outline

The Junior Primary Phase (Grades 0, 1, 2 and 3) strives to cater for the needs of all children by encouraging the girls to develop a confident, enquiring and independent style of thinking. The St Mary's girls explore their potential through group work, reading, numerical skills, art and drama, on the sports field, in the swimming pool and in the choir. St Mary's girls experience a diverse range of skills that will equip them for the future. St Mary’s Junior Primary embraces the framework of the National Curriculum Statement. A Maths curriculum from Singapore, the Thrass spelling, reading and handwriting programme and the International Primary curriculum both from the United Kingdom, form the basis of our curriculum. The School is well supported by therapists who offer Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Play Therapy and Remedial Therapy.

Each child is further extended through a varied and integrated extra-curricular programme that includes ball skills, swimming, netball, diving, rhythmic gymnastics, hockey, drama, listener's library, beading, arts and craft, ballet, pottery and chess.

Each Grade is responsible for one Market Day annually. Collectively they decide on what they will sell and they learn about advertising, budgeting and profits. In recent years we used the money raised to make up personal Christmas presents for a number of children at various crèches.

Outings form an integral part of the learning experience. Some of the outings that the girls have been on include visits to the Market Theatre, The Amazing Maze, Lesedi Cultural Village, Douglasdale Dairy and Gold Reef City. Workshops pertaining to themes are also held for the different Grades each term and include puppet shows, theatrical productions, sun awareness talks, slide shows and soccer skills by a professional. The Bookweek which takes place annually includes a book character parade, the making of books, a story-telling pyjama evening and some theatrical productions. All girls are involved in an annual School Play, Sports Day and Swimming Gala.
