Swimming is taken very seriously especially in the Junior Primary as we feel it is a life skill that needs to be mastered. In 2010 we started a system where the Junior Primary extra-curricular swimming became compulsory and there has been a noticeable improvement in the girls’ ability. The Junior Primary Interhouse swimming gala takes place in the third term and this includes all girls from beginners to competent swimmers.
All Senior Primary girls take part in swimming during their morning Physical Education lessons and the team swimmers have two extra-curricular slots per week. We offer swimming for beginners or non-team girls who wish to improve their stroke technique or fitness. At the end of the first term, every girl in Senior Primary takes part in the Interhouse Gala.
There are three teams at St Mary’s, A to C, which allow for up to 100 girls to compete for their School every Friday afternoon. The girls start to participate competitively from Grade 3 and all events are run on a relay system. The annual St Stithians 50m Night Gala is one of the main events of the season. This takes place in the third term and includes individual and relay events. St Mary’s has won this for the past four years.
