IThe annual Howell-Pullen Hockey Tournament took place between the 21 and 28 July at various venues including St Marys School Waverley, St Andrews School and Roedean School. This tournament has an u16 section and a 1st team section. School teams from across Johannesburg participated.
The first round consisted of pool matches in which teams played three 25 minute games to determine pool winners. Both St Mary’s teams moved through these matches comfortably, coming first in their respective pools.
The following Tuesday and Thursday saw the quarter-final and semi-final rounds. These cross-pool play-offs exhibited the high standard of school girls’ hockey and established the teams which would be playing in the finals of each section. The St Mary’s teams both secured a place in the finals as did both the St Andrews teams.
The Howell-Pullen finals kicked off, at St Mary’s School, with the u16 match. St Mary’s u16A team narrowly lost to St Andrews in a tough game. Following this 2-0 loss, the St Mary’s 1st team took to the field to the sound of much appreciated support from the girls and parents. The following 50 minutes consisted of exhilarating hockey, with St Mary’s winning the match 3-0. Since the start of the tournament in 2006, this was the second time that the St Mary’s team has won the tournament. This victory was a fitting end to a successful hockey season.
