African Languages

African Languages Department is a dynamic department which encourages the learning of both the language and culture of isiZulu and Sesotho. Our curriculum aims to provide four Learning Outcomes: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing, Writing and Presenting and Language. In our teaching, we seek to achieve balance with regard to these four aspects. The use of IT and other resources such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, videos and computers is increasing.

In the classroom, our languages allow the girls to read the stories which are rich in culture. This assists the girls to appreciate and embrace different culturally diverse backgrounds and respect others’ cultures.

Each year one of the IEB schools hosts a cultural day. This is when students from a variety of IEB schools come together to celebrate thecultures and the great diversity in South Africa, through dance, music and literature. This is a day of fun, food and the performing arts. The girls studying African Languages have the opportunity to visit Lesedi Cultural Village where they learn more about culture.

Whilst recognizing and understanding the importance of doing well in examinations, we are motivated to help develop pupils who are not only intent on achieving good results but also contribute to the wider community. Our Languages have great currency and provide students who are proficient in them with the opportunity of gaining access to those sought-after places in the medical science faculties.
